Real Mass Murder: The Sacrament

TheSacramentFilmFestivalPoster.jpg
THE SACRAMENT:  2013: Horror:  Based on the true life mass murder of the cult of The Johnston Massacre of 1078, this mockumentary is a truly disturbing and mind provoking piece that will leave you wondering how many of these cults there are out there and what their ultimate goals are.

Guns guarding the Eden Parish, never a good sign.

What makes this film so convincing is the clever use of found footage and believable characters that are not well know actors.  If they had been, it would have thrown made the movie less convincing. For a while you actually suspend belief and accept the fact that you are watching a documentary about this wayward cult.

Speaking your mind is not allowed in the Eden Parish.

At first everything seems normal in the sense of a commune where people have given up their every day possessions and modern day worries to be part of this religious group that values humanity, love, and equality under God's eyes.  Is it a cult though?

The leader called the Father is evasive with questions.

The movie starts to give you clues regarding the actual state of the inhabitants through a little girl who asks to leave.  The only problem is that they aren't allowed to leave for fear of getting shot.  Of course, these are only acting as a "precaution", but it soon becomes clear that no one is allowed to leave for fear of death.

Things start to unravel as the documentary goes on..

Soon after the interview between the filmmakers and the leader of the cult, it becomes clear that many of the inhabitants want to leave with the makers of the film.  The only problem is that there is only room for the original 3 people who made the film.

There isn't enough room in the helicopter for everyone.

What makes this movie special is that it does give you a sense for what happened with the cult of the Branch Dividians.  While this was based on original events where 167 people committed mass suicide, it's impossible not to compare it to the Dividians.  This made the movie somewhat original and kept me interested.

The original tragedy in Waco Texas.

Another aspect that made this movie stand out was the pacing, which was fast and in your face.  No down periods here.  The acting was excellent and at times you had a tough time distinguishing whether or not this was real or not.  This is extremely tough to pull of but the movie did a great job.  The horror in the movie wasn't pull your hair out scary, but psychologically disturbing and mind provoking as I indicated.

Fearing the end, the leader prepares his followers for the end!

Time to drink the kool-aid, but it's got another ingredient of course..

The Sacrament was a unique movie that dealt with some interesting topics and loosely based on actual events so I rate this a 71%
